A Statement On The War In Ukraine
The Animalis Sanctuary will be holding a series of family friendly events to support charities that are working tirelessly to support the animals and the people caring for the animals that are the voiceless victims of the war in Ukraine. Please visit this page for weekly updates.
The Zoo Military Commune
Thousands of creatures remain trapped in Ukraine; they are the voiceless creatures inhabiting the zoos, aquariams and shelters with no chance of escape. There are dedicated heroic individuals co-habitating with these creatures so they can continue to be cared for as all souls nonhuman and human struggle to survive this war. Tragically food is running out quickly and the animals are being traumatized by the relentless shelling. The trauma is so severe that some animals are being maintained on sedatives. Mothers of new borns are abandoning their young. This mounting trauma experienced by the animals requires around the clock care by highly skilled care givers and family members.
Some of the care givers have been killed in attacks by the Russian army as they were caring for these beautiful creatures. Two employees of the Harkiv Zoo died when they came under attack while feeding the animals. Another two individuals were killed at the Feldman EcoPark by mortar and machine gun fire while attempting to feed the animals. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (@mMFA_Ukkraine) shared a post on Twitter, stating that the Russian army is still shelling zoos and animal shelters and that countless animals have been separated from their owners.
Kyrylo Trantin the director for Kyviv Zoo which homes two hundred species of nearly four thousand animals describes “The Zoo Military Commune” This Zoo Militia is a cadre of forty workers comprised of veterinary specialists, keepers, electricians and family members who have been living at the zoo since the start of the invasion.
We will be holding a Virtual Vigil combined with a concert at the Animalis Sanctuary for the benefit of zoos in Ukraine.

We will be honouring the Zoo Military Commune and those who have lost their lives protecting the innocent and voiceless, the animals with a vigil and benefit concert featuring “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saens. Children, pets and plush animals are encouraged to attend and experience the magic artwork and musical menagerie of the Verbier Festival/VF Kids Zone
